Anatomy class, part 1

This semester, I'm taking an Anatomy class, and I have the pleasure of watching my art improve! (It also helps that there's a model in front of me...) The class really helps me to see the underlying structure of the body and understand the parts of the body.

We first dove in with gestures, gauging our skills for the first class.

Then, after a lecture, we went into skeletal gestures.
(I never realized how much more I needed to improve until then, haha.)

Our teacher let us start a bit on observing the contour of the muscles.

Then, onward to the second week!

We got into skulls!
Numbered to show progression.

We were instructed to do an overlay of the features of the model onto the skull.
The point was to structure the features around the skull, not to make a likeness.

The emphasis was supposed to be on the skull, not the features.
Supposed to...hehe.

And do the same in our homework!

And then, week 3, we concentrated on torsos.

Some gestures to start us off. (And to show my wonderful abilities at Photoshop editing and camera skills. Sarcasm intended.)

We had to really concentrate on the planes of the muscles with a book opened to muscles of the torso. It was like a "look and match."

The artist, Sycra, was nice enough to record her(?) drawing process and put it up on YouTube! She does say, "I haven't learned how to properly do gesture drawings..." in the video description. However, I feel it really puts a perspective on "how to draw the human figure."

If anything, it makes me want to try a few drawings like this myself.

which is unfortunate.
And that is why I asked my followers on my tumblr to send in any requests they had!

One of them asked for a sketch of Rhona Mitra in the movie Doomsday. I never watched the movie, but I found a screenshot I thought I'd like to reference.

I wanted to revisit the drawing exercise I uploaded before, but I used textures from lostandtaken to make it "prettier."

Character Design Final! Reimagining A Series...

Our final assignment was to re-imagine one of the five titles given to us. I chose "A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning" by Lemony Snicket because I was a big fan of the series when I was younger!

Oh. I'm nineteen now.

Sad face.

Anyway, here's to edits of stories that make the original authors fidget in discomfort!

Premise:

In a futuristic world, scientists start to create and study human-like androids under the false name, "Victorian Fashion Droids." After going further and further, the Baudelaire couple successfully create two androids, BV10 and BK15, that imitate a lifecycle of a human with their secret "Vitality Function Drive." Holding two android babies in their arms, they start to ponder the repercussions of these experiments. As one of the leaders who spearheaded the VFD project, they call for its termination on moral grounds. Naturally, the whole project was split in two: those who supported them and those that wanted to keep going. Ultimately, the project was dropped, and the Baudelaire couple raised the two as their own children.

Fast forward sixteen years, the Baudelaire children learn their parents died in a horrific fire, caused by "a gas leak." (Which is strange in itself because the whole Baudelaire estate is run by electricity...) The orphans are taken in by Dr. Olaf, one of the other leaders in the VFD project, who has more sinister and selfish motives of keeping them around.

Fans of the series would pick up on the constant use of VFD.

Overall, it was a pretty awesome project! I had fun working with it. My roommates, Maggie and Ellen, helped me to come up with some of the acronyms and fleshing out more of the premise.

Korra Waterbending

I have this need to post this fanart I did because I am super excited for the release of Avatar: Legend of Korra.

Oh man, words cannot express how much love I have to the Avatar series.

Drawing During Class

During our Character Design class, taught by Ed Bell, Ed would put up a few drawings and talk about how we could approach them! It's basically a great excuse to practice figure drawing for a good hour.

I happened to have my giant tablet and laptop during this class, so everything is done in Photoshop CS5.
